Services > Overview

OGC Webservices

The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) is an international consortium of 350 companies, government agencies and universities participating in a consensus process to develop publicly available interface specifications. OpenGIS specifications support interoperable solutions that "geo-enable" the Web, wireless and location-based services, and mainstream IT. The specifications empower technology developers to make complex spatial information and services accessible and useful with all kinds of applications. More information about the OGC can be found on the OGC website.

OGC OpenGIS Services within the ADAGUC project

Three OGC OpenGIS Services are used in the ADAGUC project to dissimenate atmospheric datasets through the internet. The Web Mapping Service is for visualization, the Web Feature and Web Coverage services provide the original data.

Web Mapping Service (WMS)

A Web Mapping Service is purely intended for visualization. A WMS returns images with a certain style or legend applied to it. The WMS is used for cartographic output. Original data like raster values or vector data can not be retrieved using the WMS. To obtain the original data the WFS and WCS services are used. It is however possible to query specific information at a location with a WMS. For more information see http://www.opengeospatial.org/standards/wms.

Web Feature Service (WFS)

The Web Feature Service is used to provide access to the original data, in this case features or vectors. These can be are points, lines, polygons or multipolygons. For example satellite swath data is stored as vector data, which can be dissimenated using the WFS. The WFS uses the Geography Markup Language (GML) as the payload between the server and the client. For more information see http://www.opengeospatial.org/standards/wfs.

Web Coverage Service (WCS)

The Web Coverage is used to provide access to the orignal raster data, for example satellite images and digital elevation maps (DEMS). Using the WCS the raster data can be spatially subsetted, reprojected and resampled. The WCS supports different output formats. The outputformats supported by the ADAGUC WCS are currently:
  • HDF5
  • NetCDF4-CF
  • NetCDF3-CF
  • GeoTiff
  • AAIGrid
See the ADAGUC data product standards format for detailed information about HDF5 and NetCDF4-CF. For more information about the OpenGIS WCS service see http://www.opengeospatial.org/standards/wcs.
These three services are used in the Web Portal to view and dissimenate the data.
